Michigan rowing team finishes second at NCAA Championships
The Michigan rowing team was the second-ranked team entering this weekend’s NCAA Championships and left Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. on Sunday with a runner-up trophy.
The Wolverines won a national title in the second varsity eight race and finished behind national champion Virginia, which had a boat in every grand final of Sunday’s third day of competition.
Virginia won the first varsity eight race, beating a second-place Michigan boat that included Pioneer High School graduates Colleen Macke (coxswain) and Julie Darnton.
Michigan’s national title in the second varsity eight was its second in program history, according to MGoBlue.com. The second-place overall finish matches Michigan’s previous best, set in 2001.
The Wolverines’ first varsity four finished sixth in the petite final.
Cal finished third in the team standings, followed by Princeton and Ohio State. Big Ten teams from Wisconsin (11th) and Michigan State (16th) also participated in the 16-team finals.
