Residents in The Polo Fields, a subdivision in Scio Township, have petitioned the Washtenaw County Road Commission for a special assessment district to tax themselves for road repairs, which could cost up to $1 million.

The community consists of Saginaw Green North, Saginaw Greens East and two condominiums, The Fairway at the Polo Fields and The Preserves at the Polo Fields. There also is a golf course located there.

There are two entrances to the subdivision off Park Road, east of Zeeb Road, one entrance off Zeeb Road and two entrances off Liberty Road, west of Zeeb Road.

The Road Commission has been working with the Homeowners Association for about a year and a half on the special assessment district process. Two meetings were held for residents about the project, one in December 2010 and one in September 2011.

The subdivision was built during a 15-year period and as such, the roads have a variety of needed repairs. For instance, the original roads in Saginaw Greens North, with its entrance off Park Road, need total rehabilitation.

The newer roads are expected to need milling and resurfacing, therefore, the road work has been divided into two separate petitions and the amount for the assessments for the work will be calculated based on where a resident lives in the subdivision.

“This was done so the assessments equal the benefit they would receive from their road improvement,” according to information about the districts from Road Commission officials.

In total, about 4.57 miles of roads within the subdivision will see work.

Receipt of the petitions from the homeowners is the first step in many that are required to get together all the paperwork necessary, determine a total project amount as well as individual amounts for home owners and hold a public hearing on the request.
